Saturday!

An interesting turnaround; as someone noted earlier, whilst most people work in the week and relax at the weekend, we've been doing the opposite. Fitting work around going out is pretty much the order of the day on weekdays, but work gets done at weekends since there's plenty of time to do it in. And going out on a Saturday is a dead loss in general since that's when normal people go out, and it gets crowded and unstudenty. Fridays too. Actually, I've got a pathetically small amount of work done today (but then I had lectures this morning), what with being shattered from staying up late and going out all week. It's a hard life being a student. Just lay down and slept through half the afternoon, which I needed; now I have some sort of a vestige of focus and wakefulness. I'm trying to convince myself to get stuck into enzymes, but my grasp of the subject is not what it might be and I'm just bone idle so it's going pretty slowly. Hand-in is Monday theoretically, and actually anytime tomorrow due to practical considerations, so that at least is motivation.
Managed to oversleep this morning and miss a lecture (told you I was tired). Not too much of a loss, from what I heard, and I wasn't the only one (there's an understatement) but all the same it's not great. It's hard enough keeping up round here as it is, so...
Went out clubbing in a suit and academic gown a couple days ago (don't ask), which was entertaining but got me some decidedly bemused looks. Headbanging in a gown is good fun.

Books!

I have aquired more books! Yeah, so exciting, I know... There was a sale on today at a warehouse the other side of town and so, as a result, I have aquired 6 (pretty good, and new) books for as many pounds. Sadly, no biology textbooks, so it looks like I'm still going to have to fork out in a big way if I want to be able to get a textbook that won't permanently be out of the library later in the year. Sadness.
I need to be doing work, and that sucks, because it's a beautiful day and I really don't feel like it. Best make myself do it though. After I've done this. And eaten. And done various other unspecified but absolutely vital tasks. Like facebook.
I need to get another can opener. I've lost mine, and now have half a weeks worth of tinned food lying around the place completely useless.

I should be working...

So, I've got a free afternoon for once, an essay to do, notes to write and review, a supervision to prepare for... so naturally I'm writing this. It's been long enough since I last did. I'm now on facebook! What an achievement. Started a lecture series on molecular biology today and it is completely kicking my arse; it's going to be a LONG time before I get my head around that. At last I don't feel tired, having slept in until 2 in the afternoon yesterday (Sunday's my only chance to sleep in, so I might as well take full advantage).
If I wasn't procrastinating I'd probably have finished that essay by now...
Still stiff from yesterday's Karate. Those stretches really hurt. But it was fun. Probably not doing anything tonight but tomorrow I may go to Wake Up Screaming at the Kambar, which looks pretty good.
"all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death". Why did that quote suddenly come to mind? I have no idea. Bit morbid! Stream-of-consciousness continues... my room is in such a mess, it's shameful, but it wouldn't really be worth clearing it up; after all, I'd only mess it up again.
I need to get down and write that essay.

Yesterday I was introduced to the joys of biking around cambridge. I'm no the most confident cyclist around vehicles, so that was terrifying at first, but I think I'm getting pretty used to it. And it's certainly the best way to get around here.
Went to the Freshers fair and signed up for a significant chunk of the societies there (five different varieties of martial arts, for instance). I'm not sure why. I've registered to have my brain scanned bytwo separate groups of people, all in the name of research. So I'll have plenty to do.
today I have an introductory lecture; "real" lectures begin tomorrow. That should be interesting. Then of course I have all the standard rushing around doing stuff, including formally entering the college.
Opted to go on a "cafe crawl" last night, since I didn't feel like drinking (the main event was a pub crawl). It turned out to be very enjoyable, and I'm glad I went. In particular we went to a wonderful vegetarian place, the Rainbow Cafe (opposite the entrance to King's, down an alley, btw). Tried guanabana juice there, and it's absolutely gorgeous, honestly. I've also become addicted to chocolate-coated coffee beans. Worryingly expensive tastes for a student, but there you are.
All in all, things are going pretty well so far, and hopefully this state of things will continue.

Day three in the big college house...

This post comes to you from a computer room in college. Freshers is going very well indeed so far, though there's a lot- a LOT - to remember. Already been to a couple of parties, got to know plenty of people, visited vital locations like the library, the bar, the computer room, the bar, and so on. Also the bar. I've been completely converted to dancing, even if I do look like a spastic giraffe on speed, due to said parties (without having drunk alcohol first, amazingly enough). I'm meaning to get down to the societies fair later, and spy out a few. The Assasins looks enjoyably wierd, whilst I also quite like the look of fencing. Also several others, but I'm going to have to limit the amout I join, since the workload here promises to be quite heavy; typically a 40-hour week is what i've been hearing. Fortunately, being a science student only about 12 of those is work outside of lectures, practicals, tutorials and so on, so i don't need quite as much self-discipline as the arts people do. Nevertheless...
I haven't actually biked anywhere yet; since I've arrived I haven't left college grounds. Anywhere else that might be a bit sad, but here that's not so unusual, due to our handy placement mile from anywhere else. I probably will later, however. Hopefully i won't fall off; members of the college keep reminding us about one of last years freshers who was hit and killed bking down the road from here.
We've repeatedly over the last two days been told the blindingly obvious; don't do drugs, don't get so drunk you start damaging things, don't get run over...
There's a cat here, which is nice. So far as I can tell it does nothing but lie on a chair by the entrance fast asleep. It's about as lively as a brick, but still, a cat is a nice thing to have around.
Anyway, I need to go and do something vaguely sociable, so that's it for now.
